Cotati This Summer: What the Plaza Reset Means for Your Week

Two things are happening in downtown Cotati at the same time this summer, and they are not unrelated. The plaza's fixed calendar is running at full volume, from a Wednesday farmers market to a 35th accordion festival. And the two oldest anchors on Old Redwood Highway have new people behind the bar for the first time in a generation.

If you already live here, the interesting question is not which weekend to visit downtown. It is how the ownership reset changes the rhythm of a normal week between June and September. The short answer is that the plaza is being reassembled around the people who already walk to it.

What actually changed on Old Redwood Highway this spring

The two ownership changes worth knowing about closed within weeks of each other. The 89-year-old tavern 8 Ball on Feb. 28 held a soft opening to celebrate its new ownership under an all-female management team looking to bring back popular community events while maintaining the bar's look and feel. A block away, new developments are also taking shape at the long-standing establishment Spancky's. The bar was sold by Kevin Gingher in January to Cheryl Cruz and husband and manager Bill Katsaros.

The Spancky's building itself has been the same address through several eras. Spancky's began as the Cotati House in 1911, a stop-over inn and roadhouse for weary travelers. When U.S. Highway 101 diverted traffic from Cotati, the owners transformed the building and it evolved under multiple names, including Sophie's, named for then-owner Sophie Gwerder, who previously owned restaurants in Oakland. Over the years, the inn turned into a roadhouse bar and attracted such legendary musicians as Van Morrison, Neil Young, Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead, and Arlo Guthrie. None of that is new. What is new is that the two rooms most identified with the town's nightlife are running under fresh leadership in the same season.

The most concrete consequence for residents is the return of a specific tradition. Popular community events, including reinstating the Cotati Crawl, which for years drew people to the bar as well as the now-closed Friar Tuck's and Cotati Yacht Club are on the new team's stated agenda. If you have lived here long enough to remember the Crawl, that is the signal to watch this summer.

"Cotati's leaders say their downtown is booming as new businesses arrive and longtime enterprises relaunch with new owners at the helm."

Read that sentence twice. "Relaunch" is the operative word. This is not a wave of newcomers. It is the same rooms, run differently.

The plaza sets the tempo

Everything else in a Cotati summer bends around La Plaza Park, which is small enough that one event fills it and dense enough that a Wednesday evening market can turn into a plan without anyone deciding to make one. Held in historic La Plaza Park, this seasonal market features locally-grown veggies, fruits, flowers, artisan foods, and arts & crafts. There's always live entertainment, activities for children, wine, beer, and community fun. The market is open June through September on Wednesdays, 4:30-7:30 p.m.

The Wednesday market is the plaza's baseline. On top of that, the city stacks a handful of set-piece dates that are worth writing on the fridge now rather than discovering three days out.

A few notes on that grid. Kids Day is not a light lift. The City of Cotati is hosting the 33rd Annual Kids Day Festival and Parade on Saturday, July 11, 2026. This year's theme is "Cotati Kids Dig Into Fun!" Bring the whole family downtown for a fun-filled day celebrating Cotati's kids and community. Costumes are encouraged. The parade begins at 10:00 AM at Cotati City Hall and will make its way through downtown Cotati to La Plaza Park, where parade judges and the festival will be waiting. The Cotati Chamber of Commerce will also have a booth at the festival, so be sure to stop by and say hello. 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM: Free Pancake Breakfast at Church of the Oaks; 9:00 AM: Parade lineup begins on East School Street near Cotati City Hall; 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM: Kids Day Parade; 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM: Free Festival at La Plaza Park. If you live on Old Redwood Highway, West Sierra, or Henry Street, plan on foot travel for the morning.

The Accordion Festival is the outlier on scale. The 35th Cotati Accordion Festival 2026 celebrations will be held at La Plaza Park in Cotati, California, USA on August 15th and 16th, 2026. This is a non-profit event benefiting local youth groups. The program is broader than the name suggests. Music at the festival will range from Conjunto to folk, jazz, Irish, Venezuelan, rock, classical, zydeco, western and more. The event will include a Jam Tent, a Zydeco Dance Party, a Student Stage, the Ray's Deli Stage, and two main stages, along with over 60 vendors selling crafts, accordions, food, wine and beer. One detail worth flagging for the ownership reset story: the Sunday Zydeco Dance Party runs at Spancky's, which means the plaza's biggest weekend is now also the first major test of the new ownership team on Old Redwood Highway.

A walkable resident's week

Here is where the reset changes things. Because the two anchor bars now share an interest in bringing people back to the sidewalk, the calendar quietly rewards a week that starts light and builds toward the weekend rather than one that treats the plaza as a Saturday errand.

A workable rhythm for July or August, assuming you live within the hex:

• Monday or Tuesday. Skip the plaza entirely. Redwood Cafe at 8240 Old Redwood Highway runs live music on weeknights through the summer, including Trivia Night on Tuesdays and a rotating lineup that has featured Dream Farmers, New Skye Band and Irish Music sets from 6 to 8 p.m.
• Wednesday, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. The farmers market. Treat it as dinner rather than a stop. Produce plus prepared food from the vendors plus whatever is playing on the plaza's small stage.
• Thursday. A quiet night. This is when the new ownership at 8 Ball and Spancky's is most watchable, because it is when a bar has to be a bar rather than a venue. If the Cotati Crawl comes back in any form, it will begin as a Thursday habit before it becomes a Saturday event.
• Weekend. Pick your set piece: Kids Day on July 11, Movies in the Park on August 5 or September 20, or the Accordion Festival on August 15 and 16. The rest of the weekend keeps working around La Plaza's food row, which residents already know covers most cravings within a five-minute walk.

That food row is worth naming, because national coverage tends to flatten it. The charming downtown area is a 'Best of' restaurant destination all on its own in southern Sonoma County. A quick stroll along Cotati's Old Redwood Highway between Highway 116 and Valparaiso Avenue reveals virtually any cuisine you could crave, including classic American at Superburger, Mexican at Mi Ranchito, Thai at Tiny Thai, and Vietnamese at Mai Vietnamese. Add Café Salsa Grill on the same stretch and the pattern is clear. You can build a summer week without ever getting in a car.

One climate detail residents already know but visitors do not

If you have lived here for a couple of summers, you have noticed that a July evening in Cotati is not a July evening in Santa Rosa. That is not an impression. Because of a gap in the coastal mountains to the west, coastal fog often reaches Cotati in the summer, creating a milder and somewhat cooler climate than in neighboring communities such as Santa Rosa or Sebastopol. The practical consequence is that plaza evenings run later than they look like they should. A 6 p.m. concert on the grass is often more comfortable at 8 p.m. than at 4 p.m., which changes how you plan a Wednesday market visit or a Kids Day afternoon.

It is also the reason the plaza works as a commons at all. In a hotter microclimate, an open square with a hex street around it would empty out by mid-afternoon. Here it fills up.

The thing worth doing before August

If you have been meaning to walk into 8 Ball or Spancky's under the new ownership, do it in June or early July. Both rooms will be busier once the Accordion Festival brings weekend visitors and the Zydeco Dance Party lands at Spancky's on August 16. The rooms are the same rooms, but the first summer with new operators is the summer the tone gets set, and residents who show up early tend to shape what those places become.

The plaza does not need a promotional push. The reset does. That is the story of Cotati's summer 2026, and it is a story that reads differently if you live inside the hex than if you are reading about it from Marin.
